NFC can open up Pandora’s Box for all industries
NFC (Near Field Communication) is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology that enables the exchange of data between devices over about a 10 cm distance.
NFC is an upgrade of the existing proximity card standard (RFID) that combines the interface of a smartcard and a reader into a single device. User can seamlessly share content between digital devices, pay bills wirelessly or even use their cell phone as an electronic traveling ticket on existing contactless infrastructure already in use for public transportation.
The main advantage of NFC over Bluetooth is the shorter set-up time. Instead of performing manual configurations to identify Bluetooth devices, the connection between two NFC devices is established at once (under a 1/10 second).
Due to its shorter range, NFC provides a higher degree of security than Bluetooth. This also makes NFC suitable for crowded areas where correlating a signal with its transmitting physical device (and by extension, its user) might otherwise prove impossible.
NFC can also work when one of the devices is not powered by a battery (e.g. on a phone that may be turned off, a contactless smart credit card, etc.).
With NFC becoming common in near future we may soon see a cashless society. User can simply pay by swapping their mobile phone at a kiosk to pay their bill. User won’t even need to carry a credit or debit card. Google expect half of the US mobile market to be filled with NFC enabled device by the end of 2014. This will lead to retailers taking the full advantage of the technology.
NFC chip or tags are really small in size. It can be embedded into movie poster, real estate agents posters, and grave stones as well. All the user has to do is swipe the NFC enabled device over the movie poster. The user will be taken to movie site where much more information will be available. User can see the trailers, special videos, actors’ interviews. As NFC technology keeps expanding its reach we may see its implementation in food packaging, flyers, and merchandisers as well.
NFC can be used in health care department as well. Patient record can be kept in bed side chart for the doctors and nurses’ easy access. There are experiments going on to use NFC for tracking glucose levels, temperature and other health information by putting the chips on skin.
NFC is opening up new doors. Soon NFC will replace car keys, ID badges and credit /debit cards. The future of NFC looks very promising.
